Today at the 2017 New York International Auto Show, Subaru debuted the Subaru Ascent Concept. It’s looking more and more like a production model compared to the previous iteration. The Subaru Ascent will carry up to 7 passengers across 3 rows, and be powered by an all-new turbocharged direct injection Boxer Engine. Yes, you read that right, turbocharged.
The exterior design follows Subaru’s new “Dynamic x Solid” theme with powerful fender flares and a “bluff grille” as Subaru is calling it. The chassis is based on the Subaru Global Platform that debuted last year, but will be modified to fit the larger dimensions.
Speaking of dimensions, Subaru says the body size is 198.8 x 78.3 x 72.4 inches with a wheelbase of 117 inches. Comparing to the 2018 Forester, the Ascent is ~17 inches longer, ~12 inches taller, and ~2 inches wider, with a ~14 inch longer wheelbase.
Some media outlets are saying the all-new turbocharged engine will be a 2.4-liter.
Subaru says the new Ascent will be built at Subaru of Indiana, Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana and will go on sale in North America starting in 2018. They also say it will be exclusive to the North American market.
